Council Member Ritchie Torres, Council Member of the 15th District, is proud to honor Young Audiences New York (YANY) for its role in shaping and enriching the lives of countless students of District 15 in the Bronx; and
WHEREAS: Throughout their 25-year tenure at PS 205, YANY has worked tirelessly to increase student academic performance and promote positive youth development through arts education. At PS 205, YANY is the sole provider of after-school programming and has thus become a staple in the lives of its students and their families; and
WHEREAS: YANY’s programming – including theater, dance, and music education – is geared toward serving the “whole child.” The concept of “it takes a village” is emblematic of YANY’s approach to education. From hosting art workshops for hundreds of student families to providing underprivileged students with basic school supplies, YANY goes above and beyond to meet the needs of their students and engage the broader PS 205 community; and
WHEREAS: In the wake of tragedy, YANY has proved to be a valuable community partner. In December of 2017, a fire – the City’s deadliest in decades – struck the heart of the PS 205 community. YANY immediately expanded its scope of work to increase their presence at the school. They greeted children in the mornings, served as a sounding board for concerned parents, and offered additional support for school staff; and
WHEREAS: This past summer, when a senseless act of violence, claimed the life of a beloved teenager in the community, YANY once more proved their unwavering commitment to this district. They mobilized their students to share the healing power of the arts by putting on song and dance performances at a number of community-organized anti-violence events; and
WHEREAS: For nearly 70 years, YANY has worked tirelessly toward their mission to give children in NEW York City who face adversity the opportunity to experience a strong, enduring relationship with the arts, thus positively changing these young people’s lives for the long term. Their exemplary work at PS 205 in District 15 of the Bronx is the best example of this pledge; now, therefore
BE IT KNOWN: That Ritchie Torres, Council Member of the 15th District, gratefully honors
Young Audiences New York
for their outstanding contributions to the children of New York City.
